I used to have Paul Schofield on my list. Why did I take him off? Brian Wilde was also the entertainingly ineffectual prison officer in Porridge.

Abby Mann

Writer of the 1961 film 'Judgement At Nuremburg', aged 80.

Rather than provide a link to a full obituary, I thought I would, instead, link to the short and sombre announcement of the news on Radio 4 this morning:

Advance Warning...

Sadly, it seems that Sir Bobby Robson expects to make an appearance on this thread sooner rather than later.

My, that's rather shocking. I remember him from the late 90s when Touring Cars was on BBC (?) - always seemed a good bloke. Watched News24 for a couple of hours earlier but didn't announce who had been killed...rather odd to discover it's somebody I knew of.

This is so very sad, but Sir Bobby's words in the article say everything about the man.

Thanks for that post.

Bobby Robson, a true gentleman of English football.

I remember when we played Porto in a preseason friendly in 1995 at Stamford Bridge and he received a standing ovation from the Chelsea crowd, rightly so.

I thought I heard Sir Bobbo Rob on the radio the other night, making some comment or other about the Geordie nation.  You have to wonder at his apparently positive spirit, although I've always suspected his positives are more verbal tic than emotional reality.  If I'm wrong than never has such a hugely optimistic spirit been placed on such hangdog expression with such sunken shoulders.

I had to chuckle at his ambition to bring world-class cancer services to the north east.  Even in terminal illness, he's looking to bring to major tropies to Newcastle.

Rather a shame about Charlton Heston , apart from being on of my fav. actors, I dont think modern day actors can portray the term "epic" like he can... As I told my mom last night, for those few people who have not seen Ben-Hur ot the 10 commandments at least once, im sure they have heard of it..
I noticed Fidel Castro on a list... I always wanted to go to Cuba and I want that to be before he goes... I really dont want to visit when it becomes Miami #2... no fun in that
