France and Portugal won't catch Serie A for a lifetime, the new historical points in the coefficient saw to that.

This change by UEFA will make sure that in 20 years most of the clubs still won't own their own stadium, no crowd mics, still running tracks, vavanculo and merda chants still the only thing heard on TV and everyone still blaming refs for their own failings. Because the reward of 4 places is there regardless if improvements are made or not.

Re the amount of places awarded to each Country, is that based on the following changes?

Quote:
- A new system for the club coefficients: clubs will be judged on their own records (deletion of the country share for individual club coefficient unless that coefficient is lower than 20% of the association's coefficient).

- Historical success in the competition will also be acknowledged in coefficient calculation (points for previous European titles with a weighted system for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles)

I read that as being a change to the individual club rankings, and therefore how they'll be seeded in the groups? I could be wrong though?

As we all know too well Italian clubs have been increasingly hamstrung by the ownership model of their stadia for 20-30 now - in England and Germany clubs have been able to develop on site or sell land and invest in a new stadium for decades. That option's never been available to Italian clubs. Although that didn't stop Juventus getting 15 years ahead of their competition with their new stadium move!

I think clubs like Roma and Milan would still be looking to move stadium regardless of whether they're granted access to the group stages automatically, as their ambition is to be competing in the later stages not just bumping along at the bottom of European football? To do that they need co-operation from various local authorities and massive investment. We've seen with Roma at least how difficult the 1st part is..

Gab Marcotti gives a further take on the background here: http://www.espnfc.co.uk/blog/marc...nges-as-explained-by-gab-marcotti

It sounded like the clubs had UEFA over a barrel...

Actually not sure now what uefa mean with the coefficient for historical achievement.

The fault is part club part political.
The political part we know well but it also has been lacking action from the clubs.
I remember reading articles in the 90's saying Juve hoped to own the Delle Alpi in 1999 so they would no longer have to pay the 6m rent to the council. So Juve have been a long time pushing for their stadium. Other clubs only started pushing it recently after seeing the benefits of Juve's stadium as if they lacked foresight and needed it shown to them first. Other clubs can thank Juve for the pressure the local authorites are somewhat under to come to an arrangement now with their local clubs because they're all getting the green light a lot quicker now. Clubs only got their finger out after Juve had their stadium built so they're definitely partly to blame for sitting on their hands doing nothing for years despite knowing they needed to do something. Juve are ahead of everyone else through the many years work put in trying to get the first local authority to play ball.

Clubs like Roma, Milan and Inter should have had the foresight to develop their own stadia earlier, but I suppose we all had our debt and ownership changes/problems to deal with in the last 10 years....

There's the clubs' and fan's attachment to their homes as well. Though not sure the Ultras are keen on the Olimpico right now anyway....

The genie's out of the bottle now though and hopefully Roma at least can get all the parties concerned to see the benefits of a new stadium....

It's great to see the much maligned (in England anyway) Falcao back to his best tonight against CSKA. The passing and finish for the third Monaco goal was sublime.

More great news in Spuds losing again at Wembley as well! That north London empty seats syndrome was in evidence 15 mins before the end with booing at the end. How very Arsenal like.

More exciting than Spuds whichever way you look at it. I never did make it to Istanbul on my football travels....................I can't think why?

To the tune of the tribute to Gino Washington:

"Oh Lyon..........."  Gobbis out in round of 16 shocker with the Arse!

I apologise for bringing up the Europa league thread. It was uncalled for. Soon United won't even be good enough for that competition. We really should make a Championship thread specifically for United, that's where you'll be heading soon.

I love the Champions League, just not the Premier League right now...

Leicester do need to improve though before February to stand a chance of any more shocks.

And after hearing how Leicester would apparently ruin England's coefficient, seeing Tottenham slip out had some satisfaction.

Will Leicester improve in the PL now that CL last 16 qualification is secured? I got a shock when I saw their league position this morning......

Not sure, performances have mostly been average or poor all season, even in Europe.  I think there's a few issues from poor pre-season preparation, Ranieri not knowing the best team, some intensity perhaps being lost, too many changes to the team sometimes, and now a complete lack of confidence.

Kante is a miss, but I don't it's just that, although Drinkwater now being suspended weakens us a lot in midfield.  Mendy the supposed replacement for Kante has been injured all season too.  In fact Slimani aside we're yet to see the best of any of the signings, although some have had their moments.

So there's a few things, but come January hopefully a couple of smart signings can be made to strengthen the side and help build for a future beyond this season.

Verratti put on a masterclass tonight until he appeared to injure himself! I hope it's nothing serious and that he recovers to play in the second leg.

The Barcelona players surrounding the ref (who had a great game) to get Rabiot sent off was shameful. Always great to see Suarez on the verge of tears as well.

Luis Enrique is a football genius........

It's what they do. I think the football they play blinds people to the dark arts that Barcelona apply.

Aubameyang missed the second worst penalty I've seen, while it wasn't as hilarious as Zaza's. It was pathetic, right into the goalies arms.

Good to see Barca get their asses handed to them.  Can't stand them.  Hope Verratti is not injured, he was awesome tonight.

Forza Napoli for tomorrow!

PSG were fantastic.  They've not been as good in Ligue 1, but last night was the first time they looked a potential Champions League winner.

Well Bayern are taking this seriously with that team. Ancelotti must think Arsenal will be some sort of threat.
