De Ceglie on the wing has not been a successful experiment so far.

Well, Juve won. Nice result, and at times some really good passing work. We need Momo, Giovinco and Marchisio back though, neither Tiago or De Ceglie provide any creative down the wing.

Happy with result and performance. Poulsen with another good game. Diego is magic.

Delighted with the result, happy with the performance, we were the better team and definitely deserved the win.

Ferrara made a good decision to bring De Ceglie on for Tiago as Tiago wasn't effective (as usual in a game that matters!). Though De Ceglie didn't make much of a difference, can't blame Ferrara as he had to try it.

Poulsen worked hard and i thought played well as a holding midfielder.
Melo was better than the Napoli game as he worked very hard, but still lacked the quality.

We wasted all our free kicks into their box, also we were caught at the back from crosses, these issues need priority on the training ground.

Amauri was decent at holding the ball, though wasn't clinical enough on the night.

I think the stories of the night were;
Diego is closer to top form
and Caceres showed very well considering it's his first decent run out and had to contend with the mask, showed promise for a problem area on the team.

Let's not get too carried away, they could have easily scored towards the end of the game , it's still early on in the season but it's pain staking watching la signora  sigh

You got the 3 points.  The thing is to just get to the next round and then get some players back and things could be different by then.  Same for all the Italian teams- just get the 3 points for the next round

Well, it seems as though I'm out of kilter with the consensus as reagrds our performance last night.

There were positive aspects to be sure. The way we dominated possession and took the sting from the Israel team in the first 20 minutes was quite impressive. As was as the ability to offer restraint in the face of the nasty spoiling tactics of the Maccabi midfield - the number of fouls (not just on Diego) might have constitued a record in the history of the Champions League.

Three players I thought worthy of commendation were Cacares (1st half), Diego (shouldering virtually all the responsibility for opening up the opposition defence throughout) and, as usual, Chiellini.

Despite their efforts and the way we restricted Maccabi when they were in possession, I still felt that we lack a cohesion when moving from defence to attack. I felt as if I was being tortured while watching this match....and after watching Man Utd, Chelsea and the Milan-Real Madrid match, I've come to the conclusion that we are the SLOWEST team with the least amount of technical skills (in general)of any other CL team. There is a disconnectedness about both our possessional and positional skills which is really quite worrying. Perhaps we miss the influence of our captain more than I originally realized. What was particularly noticable last night was how once one of our midfield players passed the ball about 10 yards to a colleague it then looked as though that was his only involvement in that particular passage of play as he appeared to consider it someone elses responsibility to take the attack forward to the next stage.

Diego had so much possession last night. However, the off the ball movement from his colleagues was exceedingly poor. Finally, Tiago- completely pointless out there last night. Let's hope that Marchisio and Momo are back asap. DeCeglie too adds nothing to this team and shares the same one-footed limitation as Grosso.

Ciro has some serious thinking ahead.

Oh, it's not about being carried away. The Scudetto is done, over, as far as I'm concerned. Juve is not winning it. However we can still do really well in the CL, and with a bit of luck, who knows?

Can't agree more with that.

Giovinco has to play, more now than we've ever wanted him to before. He and Camoranesi flanking Diego is the only way to go with the players at our disposal.

I can't make up my mind with Melo. He loses possession countless times but does pass the ball when he wants to as well as anyone in the squad and he works hard to cover the defence. Sissoko is a must but I'm not sure whether Marchisio or Melo should partner him.

Poor second half I thought yesterday, by the way.

I don't think anyone is getting carried away in fairness, but it's okay to be happy with an away win in the CL is it not?

I hear you Myles, & yes I am happy we managed to grab the 3 points but tbh, I really wanted us to concentrate on the league rather then europe but who knows what will happen when the injured lot return.

I buy into this argument. The Napoli game prety much killed our scudetto hopes. We have to accept that Inter today is the alter ego of Juve of the '95-'04 era. They are consistent, can come back in the final five minutes if need be, and can step up a gear when need be (their reacvtion to Palermo vs our reaction to Napoli). As for the CL, it looks like it is up for grab this year. Apart from Chelsea, who were handed an easy group anyway, no one team really shined. My only hope is that we do nto draw an English team if we make it to the second round.

I see what you mean there, i would've preferred if we concentrated on the league aswell.

I think De Cegile or Brazzo could play on the left side of the crazy little trio behind Amauri in away games in the champions lge. I'm thinkin of the nights in anfield and highbury where we were roasted in the first half and never could recover over the two legs.
Those two could offer more solidity in the opening stages of a game, while Ale or Giovinco could come on later when the game has settled down and there's more space

Marchisio if you want to be even more offensive, Melo if you want some more cover for the back.

Mmmmm....a midfield with Giovinco, Diego, Camoranesi, Marchisio and Amauri up front could be VERY interesting. I worry we might lose a bit of grit in the midfield though, Melo and Sissoko when paired together have done really well.
