I need some advice about anti virus and spyware etc. What is the best/worst ? Is the free stuff better and some opinions on Norton.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

I had experience of Norton a few years ago and I found that it slowed the computer down a lot.

I currently use the free version of Avast which came highly rated.  As far as I'm aware I've not had any viruses since I started using it, and my computer's speed is fine.

The only other one I've had decent experience of is F-Secure, although that was at work.  It was a resource hog, and my work PC now runs a lot quicker since we replaced it, although it seemed decent enough at keeping out viruses and attacks.

Usually free anti-virus is counter productive as they are either huge in size so slow down the computer or put their own adware on your computer, so it's not free as this is the price you pay.

It's hard to say one vendor is better than another, reviews on the net can vary from user to user depending on their machine setup (running two firewalls is a no-no) and the settings on their anti-virus software. I definitely advise paying for a product instead of going for a freebie though.

Personally i use Bullguard for the last 3 or 4 years and so far it has done the job i pay it to do. It's 60 for three licences so you can install it on three separate machines, you can split the cost with one or two other people. It also has a PC tune up and checks vulnerabilities on your installed applications.

Whoever you go with, after you've installed it don't forget to turn off your Windows firewall, as the vendor firewall should be better.

If you have a Mac computer you don't need anti-virus.

Images over 64kb won't be accepted so the pages load faster.

If you are using a Microsoft Windows machine then;
  1. open the image in 'Paint'
  2. resize the image to a maximum width of 180pixels
  3. 'save as' a jpg format.

Apple Mac machine;
  1. open the image in you image editor
  2. resize the image to a maximum width of 180pixels
  3. 'save as' a jpg format.

Then it will be under 64kb.

Any guitarists on the forum? I used to play acoustic guitar many moons ago and have since picked up the guitar again but this time want to play some of vintage/classic rock songs using a plectrum fast picking style! If anyone could suggest any great/classic tracks that involve fast-picking techniques Id be greatly appreciated. In fact, knowledge of playing guitar isnt really a prerequisite to replying to this question ;)

I am very amateur at guitar, but some of my favorite classic rock style artists are Jake E Lee, Randy Rhoads, Fast Eddie Clarke, Steve Vai

I remember Steve Vai - used to have some of his tab music but sold it many years ago. Might just check some of those online guitar sites for some of his tab but the problem is - as far as I can remember - most online tab isn't accurate.

Myles decided a while back that he wanted to take an indefinite leave of absence from the forum.

He explained the reasons for his decision to the other Admins and myself, and given the amount of time and effort Myles had put in to the creation and management of the forum since it was founded over six years ago we had no option but to respect his position and wish him well.

Curva, Dave and myself then decided that we would attempt to continue running the forum as best we could given our relatively limited technical knowledge, but after some further discussion amongst ourselves we decided that we should perhaps look to bring someone on board who would be able to handle the more specialist aspects of operating a website such as this - as well as someone who we all had a mutual respect for given their long standing as a valued contributor to the forum - and we're delighted to say that Nino accepted our offer to become an Admin.

Our main objective was to make sure that the day to day running of the forum remained unaffected throughout any transition, and given that it's taken almost a month for anyone to ask a question regarding the whereabouts of the forum's creator indicates that things are presumably ticking along nicely.

We'll see what can be done about the Christmas decorations, but we may have put them in a box at the back of the loft that now has a big scary spider sitting on it...

I'll raise a glass in Myles' name for the all the hard work and time he's invested in the forum over the last few years.

And alas - the decorations are up   It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Cheers Myles for your hard work and contribution to this forum over the years, both here and on the C4 site.

I hope to see you back on here some day (if you read this).

I suspect that may be down to the intricacies of the Christmas foro template (see Mezz's observation of the bleeding-edge technological prowess of the three remaining admins. We have a thread in the admin bat cave which consists of a number of posts which have, at their core, the sentiment 'so what the f***'s happened there, then? )
