I see on the old forum there are still some posts from over 4 years ago - Marcello Chicarella and Misc thread. How many of us are still around from that time and has everyone got the same nom de plume?

I've changed my name twice since the really old forum with all the thread titles at the top.

There was a thread started in the very early days of this particular forum regarding old and new usernames:

Believe I would have been a minor contributor from those days.

Hiya luvs,

I have a question. I recently bought a brand spanking new laptop, and when ever I download a movie or TV show, it doesn't have any sound. I've tried to watch in Realplayer and in AVI to no avail - pictures but no sound.

Is there a simple explanation and remedy?

Thanks

I've had a similar problem recently, the driver for the sound card wasn't installed properly.

Check you've got a soundcard fitted and the software to run it is installed properly. I would imagine if it's a new PC you'll be running Vista, think they've got a diagnostics tool on there somewhere to check all is ok.

If what Micky has suggested doesn't work, this might:

Right click on 'My Computer', click the 'Hardware' tab follwed by 'Device Manager' and you should be able to see if anything isn't working correctly on your PC. If something is wrong, it'll be tagged with a black exclamation mark in a yellow circle.

You can usually uninstall a rogue feature (right click on it, click 'Uninstall') and then reboot your machine in order to fix the problem if it's an issue with something your PC came with (such as a sound card), but if that doesn't do it, I would suggest contacting the PC manufacturer or searching for support on their website.

I used to have a problem with downloaded films not having sound. Then I downloaded an AC3 filter, that sorted it. Give that a try if nothing else works.

If all that fails, check your speakers are turned on.

VLC media player is the best one out there in my opinion, plays everything no problem.

You're telling me, this place is quieter than Jade Goody's thigh master.

Myles, have you thought of maybe trying to sell some advertising space on here or something? Maybe raise some money to spend on raising the profile of the place.

No-one would pay money to advertise non-animated banners on this forum, it got an average of 142 visits per day over the last month. The only reason C4 had adverts was because they were across the whole C4 website (big brother forum, FI website, FI forum, and all their other programmes, etc) and they would get a lot more than 142 visits per day, plus a lot of their adverts were of their own TV programmes as well so their own ads don't even give their website any revenue.

I don't think anyone likes pop-up or animated ads like those that were on the C4 forum anyway. They turn away as much people as would create extra visits to the forum due to a raised profile, therefore negating selling advert space on the forum.

An Italian football forum attracts a fairly niche following of regular posters outside Italy, and so people who want to join an Italian football forum would come looking for us as much as we go looking for them.

We can only try to improve our ranking in google which improves as more people post, along with other factors that i try such as the keywords at the foot of the forum (that can be seen when you are logged out). I added more keywords yesterday based on the phrases that people googled and our forum ranked low so those people didn't click on the forum, so now the fact that those keywords are there gives us a chance of ranking higher when people google those phrases, in theory. This takes time to show threw, anything between 2 weeks and 3 months.

We are also competing with calciouk (which got a plug in the mag when it started up), along with all the italian football sections of more established websites/forums (i.e. totalfootballforums, etc). If google was really as clever as they like to think they are then they would rank ourselves, calciouk and any other 'italian football only forum' higher than those other more established websites/forums that get feck all people posting in their italian football sections but get loads posting in their EPL and SPL sections. If the forum was called footballitalian rather than footballitalia we would rank higher, but footballitalia is the traditional name, since we all come from the C4 football italia days.

I won't personally put money towards raising our profile because it costs me stg£50 per year already, to keep the forum hosting company from putting their own revenue generating adverts between our banner at the top and the forum, and also after the signature in the first post of each thread page. So this can be a sort of barometer for what having all those ads on the forum would generate, 50 quid a year.

Those are the facts.

Now for my personal view, i think ads would deminish the integrity of the forum, therefore the only banners i prefer to be ever on the forum are links that are useful to the members from an italian football point of view.

This is just my own view however, but it is what is the view of the regular members as a whole that counts, as a forum is no-use unless it functions, appears and markets itself to the way the members want it to and so no-point having a forum that the members don't like as it wouldn't last very long. The thing is though, it would be next to impossible for any business to pay for advertising on our forum.

Simple answer to that; tell Calcio Italia to piss off unless they start pointing people in the direction of our forum.

We've put shit loads of clicks their way ever since we've allowed them to link on to their site from ours, but what have we got in return? Scores of pointless posts linking us to Half Time / Full Time results that we would have looked at anyway on the CI site if we wanted to.

f**k-a-doodle-do.

We haven't really given them any extra traffic since people would check their website by themselves, as you've said yourself.

It's more convenient for our members if there is a link to their website so we gain from that perspective.

They are contractually binded to link to the C4 forum and therefore contractually prevented from linking to our forum.

It would be helpful if the mag plugged us, but who they plug is their business.

Myles,

Just get annoyed at how few people are on here sometimes. I'm currently working for a company that has gone into Administration and for the past few weeks have been sat reading books and viewing the internet while the company is wound down. It's a shame we've lost a few regulars over the years as it can be dead on here at times.

Having said this, I'd probably be moaning again if we had a bunch of morons join and post crap threads asking monotonous questions about tickets and who everyone supports etc.

Thanks delpiero, i'll check them out. Up to now i've been using Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools since google search engine is the rank that we need to top, it's like pissing against the wind sometimes, what with trying to out-do the established websites.
