UEFA European Championships 2016 - France

A thread for Euro 16

Group A

France
Romania
Albania
Switzerland

Group B

England
Russia
Wales
Slovakia

Group C

Germany
Poland
Ukraine
N.Ireland

Group D

Spain
Czech Rep
Turkey
Croatia

Group E

Belgium
Italy
Rep.Ireland
Sweden

Group F

Cristiano Ronaldo
Iceland
Austria
Hungary
Dels

France and Cristiano Ronaldo got easy groups.

There's no "group of death" but a few group games that will capture  the imagination.

Germany are favourites.

Spain and France are second joint favourites.
Duncan!

Italy got  a tough group.   But all you can do is win the game in front of you and try to move on
Dels

You're right. That is the hardest group. I think Italy win it and Belgium will be runners up.
Duncan!

I sure hope Italy have a good tournament.  At least the semis.
Alan

Man this is depressing, an international friendly weekend for teams preparing for the Euros...and then there's Scotland.

I'll be pledging allegiance to my usual other nations of course this summer like I have been forced to do since Euro 2000.

Rep of Ireland and the Azzurri, make it less painful for me please.
Duncan!

USA got beat by Guatemala today.

I am also disappointed Scotland aren't at Euro's
Dels

I really enjoyed the match between England and Germany.

Germany, were obviously not at their strength.

Neither was England as such, but I enjoyed that England nonetheless, they were fun to watch.

That goal by Vardy was Zlatan Ibrahimovic like. Kane and Alli were brilliant.

But that's all irrelevant because when fit Wayne Rooney is fit, he will make it into the first team. And England will fail.
Yockomo

I agree. I actually enjoyed watching an England game for a change. Rooney will come back and it will all go wrong. These are friendlies though and Germany looked more comfortable with the ball than England.

The winner has to be from Germany, France and Spain but you never know. Iceland could be the new Denmark! England will play out a couple of boring draws and have to beat Slovakia. I think Italy will struggle too, but will get through to the next round. Then who knows?
Lupo Pazzesco

Dels wrote:

Scotland have already failed. Again............................
Liam

Kane and Vardy should play together for England.

3 years ago replacing "England" with "Leicester" in that sentence wouldn't have made sense!
Dels

I don't think Kane will be at Leicester anytime soon.

Lupo, never give up the day job.
Liam

Dels wrote:

He's already played for Leicester on loan in 2013, and he was hopeless and lazy.  Vardy was struggling too at that time, although he tried and was making a big step-up in fairness.

My comment was basically saying I didn't want them up front for a struggling Leicester team in the Championship 3 years ago, and now I think they should start for England.
Dels

I had no idea Kane played for Leicester at one point.

I get what you mean though.
Lupo Pazzesco

Dels wrote:

Touche!
Dels

The players Conte had to choose does not inspire. I can see Italy not getting out of the group stage. They might have to rely on Ireland being spanked by Belgium and Sweden but  don't think they will, I think Ireland might have a good tournament here.

Costa getting left out the Spanish side is hilarious. I literally lol'd when I read it.
Duncan!

while Brazil is crying out for a number 9  lol

I agree about Conte's selections.   No Giovinco?

Kind of a team depending on work rate and such

Not expecting big things from my beloved Italia.    But then again, i thought they would do well in Brazil.......
tizzle90

Who do we think will win then?

France and Germany are both miles better than anyone else for me
Lupo Pazzesco

Euro 2016 could understandably turn out to be a joyless tournament if the quoted policing numbers are anything to go by. I've been France in the CL and the security was tight, well that's been ramped up 100%. I sincerely hope there's no football trouble.

I think England will struggle defensively if they come up against the better quality teams in the knock stages (assuming they make it). Ireland will have a surprise result in the group stages but unfortunately won't get out of the group of death. Italia seem a bit workman like tbh so God alone knows how they will do?!?!
Tangerine Romanista

With 4 out of 6 of the 3rd place teams going through to the last 16 the group stages could see a few strange matches...and it may well only get really interesting after the group stages.

Will still be supporting them but unfortunately looking at the potential Italian squad you would't predict much from the Azzurri….especially as they seem to be lacking match winners like Pirlo and Balotelli, compared to recent tournaments…

Think England could do well, with Kane and Vardy they've got goals in the team, but as Lupo said when they play the big guns like France, Germany, Spain and Belgium they might come up short. We shall see.

I just need to decide whether I'm going to commit to doing the Euro 2016 Fantasy Football or not….
Lupo Pazzesco

Good summary TR.

Do the Euro 2016 Fantasy, the more the merrier!
Dels

No idea.

For a neutral, this is the most interesting Euros for a long time. I can't wait for it to start.
Ray

Why isn't Berardi in the Italian squad? Surely he's the most promising attacking player in Italy right now?
Duncan!

Because Conte is an idiot
Dels

I bet Conte hasn't even watched Sassulo play this season.
Dels

Forza France.

I want the French to win the Euros.

Just because Zidane
Duncan!

The French????  NEVER!
Dels

Yep. I've been pondering it for awhile who to support, its one of the luxuries of being Scottish   . France it is.
Lupo Pazzesco

Mmmmm I'll pick a favourite then! Why not pick a minnow.......................
Dels

England are minnows enough for you
Lupo Pazzesco

Your lot couldn't even vote for independence!
Dels

We didn't want England to be minnows on the world stage as well as football obviously.
Duncan!

Independence for Scozia!!!!!  I still think the vote was rigged.   Happens all the time in Chicago.

anyways, I will cheer for Italia as usual.    Not expecting much  from them thought..   Don't care about any European teams besides Italia and Scotland.
Lupo Pazzesco

.

Have you been watching 'The Good Wife' again?!?!
Duncan!

I wouldn't watch that crap.........

On a different note, I think Ventura being named coach of the Nazionale is a good choice given the options.   He is really decent and coached a Torino team of Italians.

I still think Quagliarella is under rated and should be going to France instead of some of the others.      Like Eder
Lupo Pazzesco

at the 'crap' comment.

I like Ventura as well, he always seems a decent sort and is good at developing players.
Myles

Liam

Ventura's a good coach.  I liked his Bari team with Ranocchia and Bonucci in central defence.  I thought Ranocchia was the better of the two as well!

I think he succeeded Conte in that job too.
Duncan!

Ace Ventura!   Alrighty then!
How about this guy......

Dels

This thread has just got weird

Who's dat?!?
Dels

Jesse Ventura I think. A wrestler.
Liam

Kante was brilliant for France.  I'm happy he's playing well, but now even more times might want him!
Lupo Pazzesco

Dels wrote:

I thought it was an 80's rock god!

Jesse "the Body" Ventura.   Wrestling icon, former governor of Minnesota, and star in the the first Predator movie

Italy 2-0 Belgium

Giaccherini and Pelle

A very professional performance by Italy. Exceptional play from Chiellini, Candreva, De Rossi, Giaccherini, Bonucci and Eder

The finishing on both goals were sublime.

One win from the remaining two matches and we should progress to the next phase.[/quote]
Dels

Well I was wrong about Italy. They looked good all over the field not just defence ( ). When I saw the teams and saw Lukaku starting I knew Belgium wouldn't get anything from this. He's good but not good enough to score against that Italian defence ( ) which was clear when he shot his only real good chance into row z. If Italy had a world class striker they would have been out of sight in this match and up there with France and Germany in the betting. Italy should win the group, they won't concede many goals, not with their typical Italian defence ( ). Sorry the defence is actually really good, I'm also a bit biased towards it.

Dare I say Belgium are a bit over-rated?! If not for their goalie that may have become embarrassing, they should be thankful Italy didn't have Totti, Vieri or even Inzaghi.

It was a good match over all and I really enjoyed it, especially the second half, Conte's nosebleed and Buffon's sprint to celebrate the second goal.
Dels

And hopefully Spain don't win again. Me watching Spain
Duncan!

I want to get excited about Italia winning the opener, but they also won the opener at the 2014 World cup against England then proceeded to lay an egg.

We shall see.   Zlatan punished them in the 2004 Euro's and that team was better than this one.
Liam

Italy were very good.  There was great organization and spirit on show, with a group of players who all seemed to know their roles.

Belgium were a collection of individuals who rarely looked like doing anything.  Like in the World Cup 2 years ago they seem overrated.

+1
Duncan!

I will still wait and see for Friday on Italia.

I have seen this too many times
Ray

Deschamps needs to play Pogba in the same position he plays for Juve, ie inside left of the midfield 3, not stuck out on the right. He's playing his best player out of position to accommodate Matuidi. The player needs a bit of help at the moment, and playing in his more comfortable position would help.

I'm really enjoying the French games. It's great to get on board with the excitement that comes with the home nation in a tournament.
Dels

Ray wrote:

And that's why Fifa always make sure the hosts get to the semi finals of the world cup at least. I'm not paranoid though.

France have been missing Benzema or that kind of striker. Griezmann is obviously class I think he'd play better with Benzema rather than Giroud. Why on earth Benzema got himself involved in a sordid sex tape blackmail scam?!?!

Roy needs to drop Kane and Ali and start with Vardy and Rashford next game. They both made the difference when they came on. I won't hold my breath though.
Liam

Harry Kane is stumbling around the pitch like the useless version who Leicester had on loan 3 years ago.  I'm glad Vardy got a chance, and hopefully he can keep his place.  Sturridge and even Rashford are worth picking over Kane as well.
Dels

Ye of little faith Duncan.

Deserved win for Italy. About equal first half but Italy totally dominated the second half. 1-0 thrashing.
Liam

I didn't think Italy were great first half with the ball.  It was a great goal from Eder though.

I think the Croatian fans threw the flares with the intention of stopping any Czech momentum, and it's backfired.  Whilst I feel for the Croat players, I found it funny that the Czechs equalised after that.
Dels

Yeah, there wasn't much between Italy and Sweden in the first half, same with the game against Belgium, but Conte must be delivering inspirational half-time speeches.

The fact that the Croats started fighting with each other I've got a feeling that it may have been planned. They were fighting with each other and not rival fans, I can to an extent understand why rival fans fight, although I don't condone it, there's so much emotion involved at times, that sometimes it boils over, but fighting with your own fans and disrupting a match when your team is winning, suggests something deeper. Slaven Billic summed it up quite well. I felt sorry for the Croatian players, you could see the distress on their faces even before the Czechs equalised. It must be so frustrating. They played so well, in both games.
Dels

Spain still so boring and managed to win 3-0. They are so winning this. Vamos I suppose.
Duncan!

Not little faith, just realism. lol

I was surprised I admit that Italia won .   I was thinking a draw and making life miserable for themselves.   Oh well, glad to be proved wrong.
Myles

Ah we're f**kin useless as usual.
Ray

We're a better team than what we showed against Belgium Myles. I expect a better performance and a few changes to the line up against an Italy side with several changes and nothing to play for.

Myles wrote:

My Dad was gutted by yesterday's shambolic performance. Trust Belguim to hit form at just the wrong moment.
Duncan!

I hope Conte doesn't make too many changes in the Ireland game.    Keep the continuity
Lupo Pazzesco

Well Ingerlund made far too many changes and it was a borefest! Again. Roy plays too safe..........................and so does his team. I'd   but it's so predictable. As Ian Dury sang "What a waste."
Dels

Wales tho

Imagine if Wales did a Greece 04 but with better football.
Duncan!

Well done to Wales.    If only it was Scotland instead
Dels

I would like to think Scotland would be inspired by Wales, but I won't get my hopes up, Gareth Bale is infinity better than anyone Scotland has produced ever.
Liam

England lack creativity.  They pass it around for ages and eventually one of the players gets bored and shoots from a position they have no chance of scoring from.  Then a man who has never passed the ball in his career came on, Harry Kane, and it got even worse.

Vardy's being asked to play as a goal poacher in the penalty area, with no service.
Duncan!

Dels. not sure if Bale is better than Dalglish or Law.  I wouldn't go that far.    Maybe he is better than Paul McStay.............

Looks lIke Italia gets Spain again.   So you win a group and get Spain?   Oh well.    Good!   I don't like Spain and if you look back at what I wrote 4 years ago after the Final I said they moved up high on my sh!t list.    So Forza Italia and give Spain a whuppin!

Oh, I guess Italia does have Ireland to play first.
Ray

C'mon you boys in green!
Dels

Duncan! wrote:

I think by the end of his career Gareth Bale will be the British football G.O.A.T. Even if he didn't play for Real Madrid. What he has done for Wales is remarkable. And is better than whatever Dalglish or Law did for Scottish football.

Italy play Spain next because Croatia are amazing.
Duncan!

Truly pissed about the game today.   I am not a fan of changing the team while it;s doing well unless need be.    Buffon would have gotten the cross that came in while Sirigu did a Zenga vs Argentina 1990.   UGH  Bitter memories

Missing Verrati, Marchisio, and not playing DDR really showed up today.

And for pete's sake, if we are to have any chance against Spain then Insigne has to start.    He is the only creative spark whatsoever.    I do like him with Zaza upfront and think they work well together.

Damit!!!!!!!
Liam

I was surprised Insigne didn't start.  Immobile and Zaza didn't work, and I think either one of those with Insigne would have been better.  I got the impression Italy were happy to play with minimal effort with the group already secured.

I won't take anything away from Ireland though, I'm happy they're through.  Iceland too, who will probably go and embarrass England even more...
Duncan!

I think Zaza and Insigne is the way to go against Spain.   Really need a bit of creativity and zip against the Spain backline.
Dels

Croatia outstanding against Spain, can't muster a shot on goal against Portgual, who haven't won a match yet.

Looking at the draw one of Belgium, Wales, Poland or Portgual is  going to be in the final.

I've been watching a lot of Elementary, its helped me with my detective skills immensely, and today, I concluded that the Rep.Ireland, Slovakia and Hungary will not being going to the final. I shall keep you updated with my findings tomorrow.

Ray, i've been away in Barcelona for a few weeks - still am - so not sure of the athmosphere at home but i've been very impressed with our lads.
Earlier comment was more flippant remark really.
Myles

Meet in Dublin shortly though.
Dels

Joachim Low. What's he all about?
Today he was touching his armpits and smelling them. Soon there's not going to be enough smelly parts for him to touch and smell live on TV.
Duncan!

Forza Italia!!!!  I have freakin' jury duty tomorrow during the game ...ugh
nino

¡Olé! Great game! And we're not being slagged off by the pundits and commentary. Good times!

Home you go Spain. Great result.
Liam

Italy were fantastic.  Controlled the whole game and made Spain look average.  Conte has shown how good organization with and without the ball is so important.
Dels

I knew Morata would crumble in the face of Buffon.

Germany next. Can't wait for it.

Joe Hart. Pep going from Neuer to Hart.
Dels

The Brexit jokes will be epic.
Liam

Liam wrote:

And then I watch England who are the exact opposite of that.
verno

Italy were pretty darn good. Contrast that match with the England one and it's like they were playing a different game.
I'm not even upset about England because I knew this was going to happen. We've changed the formula from dodgy qualifying but doing ok in tournaments to sailing through qualification and crumbling to bits in the tourney. It's clear Woy doesn't have a bloody clue and neither do the players. The French would have utterly humiliated us. Strangely I don't mind being beaten by Iceland. They had a plan, they played as a team and they bloody well wanted it and knew we were there for the taking. Well done and good luck.
Duncan!

FRATELLI D'ITALIA!!!!!   My sister was giving me updates during the game.    Please no more arguments on who the greatest GK ever is,

After the last Euros I voiced my hatred for the Spanish team.   Vindication is sweet!
Beat them playing good ol' Italian style football

Now on to the Germans who we have never lost to in a major tournament.   Which I must admit, makes me nervous for this game.   They have to be due some time....

As for England?   My mom's side of the family is of Scottish decent so my reaction is                   Might have just sent wee Gordon's team instead .  They might have turned over Iceland.
Lupo Pazzesco

I'd join you in   Duncan if it wasn't all so predictable. Basing your side on a Spurs team who capitulated in the last month of the season was never going to work out well. Hart had another shocker and must be fearful of losing both club & country gloves now. Rooney was poor and looks finished tbh.

MOTM was Rashford which says it all really.......................

Italia were magnificent to such an extent that I didn't realise Fabregas was playing till the 35th min or so! Well done Rughead & the team.

Duncan! wrote:

Come now, I think we all know that isn't true.

I'm amazed you can laugh so much after The good ol' US of A got their arses handed to them by Argentina. Even England have beaten Argentina in the past.

SO THERE.
Liam

Absolutely.  Gigi hasn't had a lot to do thanks to the brilliant trio in front of him, but when he does he delivers.

Indeed, Roy unfortunately appeared to have no plan.  No set style of play, no set team, and imo the wrong squad selected.  It's not a vintage group of England players.  The team of the Sven era had a better defence and midfield, but that doesn't excuse the underperformance last night.

I don't expect much to change.  Now an Englishman has had a go there'll be demand for a foreign coach to show us all how it's done.  When they struggle we'll get another Englishman who follows the same path as Roy and others.

I was going to say the same but I remembered about the two Arsenal players missing their penalties and decided against it. And I knew both Xhaka and Ozil would miss, I just knew and I don't know much about Xhaka yet but still I knew.
Duncan!

Verno  now now   at least the USA lost to Argentina , not Iceland
Lupo Pazzesco

England were terrible but the Argies USA.
verno

Ha.
Duncan!

Argentina is a wee bit better than Iceland

Anyways, neither is winning
