Think I'll stick a few bob on Portugal to win it all, although after 2004 anything could happen.

I hearded hagi is good player for roomani

That's a nasty group. I switched over just to see the moments before Italy were drawn and seeing the rest of the group I just knew they were coming out of that pot!

I so hope we embarrass France and knock them out in the final game, having already qualified!.........might be unlikely but we can all dream

I was praying, "Please be Sweden!", but no, group of death.  Just our luck!

Exactly we can all dream.  Let's hope it comes true though!

Domenech's reaction to France being drawn against Holland was hilarious. He was quite clearly bricking it. I wish they cut to him when Italy came out the hat.

And yet Holland have been fairly rubbish in qualifying.

True, I think they lost to Romania, Bulgaria and Belarus. Romania qualified quite a bit before them too.

Should be interesting to see how the Germans do against their neighbours Poland and Austria. Hopefully there won't be a deliberate 0-0 draw between Germany and Austria. They've done that before.
Sir George

Oooh no they haven't....

You're presumably thinking of West Germany's 1-0 win over Austria in 1982, which denied Algeria a place in the last 12.  Both teams' tactics (i.e. a non-game after the first goal) were eminently reasonable because neither side had anything to gain and everything to lose by risking losing a goal once Germany had scored.  The problem lay not with the teams but with the format of the competition and the fact that Algeria had already played their final game.  Given the corruption of the 1978 World Cup, when Peru knew exactly how many goals to let in to let Argentina reach the final, it was appalling of FIFA not to have altered the timings of the last group games in time for the 1982 World Cup.
ForzaFiori

You're right George ,I stand corrected it was 1-0.Doh!
Although I don't know about how reasonable it was for Austria to accept losing to that score seeing as they could have knocked the  West Germans out.
Sir George

They could have knocked out West Germany yes, but equally, if they'd lost by 3 or 4 goals they'd have been knocked out themselves.  So their strategy, quite reasonably, was to keep the ball and to prevent Germany from scoring.  Likewise, West Germany wanted the score to stay 1-0, so they keep the ball too.  It didn't require collusion, just an obvious acceptance all round that 1-0 suited both teams to a tee.

This sort of situation has happened lots of times, just not quite over 80 minutes play!
Bobo32

Why did germany want it to stay at 1-0?
Why would 2-0 not have suited them just as well?
As professional footballers this sort of behaviour is not acceptable
Sir George

Well maybe we can track them down and make them pay.

They were happy to stay at 1-0 because that result achieved their goal of qualifying.  Winning 2-0 or even 41-0 would not have achieved anything more than this.  And as the Germans will have remembered from 1941, unprovoked aggression is often met with counter-aggression.  The German national team simply proved, as Bismarck had in an earlier World Cup, the importance of attacking Austria at exactly the right time and then maintaining peaceful co-existence.
Batigol

Anybody else feel that Croatia could go all the way in this competition or are they heading home early?

I have a sneaky feeling that they could cause a few upsets, starting with Germany!
Duncan!

I actually think Spain could make the Final.  I know, I know, they usually underachieve gig time, but they have to come due at least once.

Hopefully, Italy will win it, but they have a spotty Euro record
Sir George

Yes, Spain could make the final.  Or the semis, the quarters or none of the above.   Just like the other 15 teams in the tournament in fact.

Maybe you could let the world know what you think the probability of them reaching the final is.  If it's greater than the bookies think (and are offering) we'll all rush out and put our life savings on it.
nino

Bloody hell, if those quotes are accurate Sissoko talks some shit.

I have no desire to learn about Sir George's oral pecadillos when he encounters grouches, thank you very much...
Sir George

I'm just trying to make something of your semblance of a thought Duncan.  Is that such a crime?  Presumably you meant to do more than state the obvious.  i.e  Spain are still in the tournament.  Maybe not.  Sorry Duncan.

Cassano for the Euro 2008 squad, I think Italy could do with him, what does everyone else think?
Duncan!

If he and Borriello can keep it up, I would take both of them.  Young blood is needed up front
sms

I'm not sure about Borriello, but if Cassano can stay fit, he shoud be in the squad.
Duncan!

If Boriello says in form, he can play in the role of Toni if he gets hurt.  Right now Italy only have either Gila or Boriello for that role.

HT: Italy 1-0 Portugal

young blood? Boriello yes but surely Cassano is 25 now?

Canna eyes back-to-back gold
Duncan!

Nice performance from Gli Azzurri

Portugal impressed at times with some good play, but this Italy squad seems to be mentally tough and just played their game .
badman

To be honest all, im still extremely sour that I didnt get tickets for euro... they had about 300,000 tickets available and about 9 million applications ( for multiple tickets each)... in a way the stadia in places like switzerland are just too small....

anyway, i wont go all the way across to europe to hope to get tickets via scalping, isnt worth it... im probably better off saving and heading to 2012 or MAYBE wc 2010 if i know anyone going...

i think itl be on the couch at home for me this summer then, and home being back in Trinidad... no way il still in this football wasteland called florida
Duncan!

I'll be in Florida in 2 weeks.  Where ya at?
badman

Hey duncan, im in Tampa, FL... attenting university of south florida...
depends when you will be here though because il be in canada from the 6th to 16th of march, spring break....

where in fl you heading?
Duncan!

Naples {Florida} from the 6th to the 11th.  I need warm weather since it is 5 degrees F right now here in Chicagoland
badman

Naples is pretty nice, about 2 and a half hrs driving from tampa.. (depnds whos driving of course)... its quiet and quite relaxing...

kinda lame that the same exact time ul be here il be leaving for canada and il be gone for 10 days.... im doing the reverse of everyone else, heading into the cold for spring break...
oh well
my friends should make it all worthwhile

Does anyone know how realistic it'll be to get tickets (2) for a game? The one I have in mind is Saturday 7 June in Geneva (30,000 capacity) Portugal v Turkey. Found a return from Brum to Geneva for £53 so might risk it.

Anyone been to Geneva? Any good?
Curva Fiesole

Geneva is a great place, but expensive but, as it's a late kick-off, I assume you'll have to stay there, otherwise I'd have suggested staying in Annecy.  I've not been to Geneva for years but can recall plenty of bars and restaurants close to the lake.

As for tickets, be prepared to pay through the nose, especially once the touts work out you're English.  At the World Cup in Germany, we tried for tickets at some of the earlier matches - Portugal v Angola they were after €200 each, I paid €350 for two tickets for USA v Czech Republic, and that was at grounds that held 50,000+.

If they're planning something similar to the Fanfests they had in Germany it'll be worth going for that, over 20,000 fans watching matches on big screens
il ferret

Blimey! No chance of getting match tickets for face value then?
Can't afford big money like that on a civil service salary! Will it make a difference with no England at the tournament? Just found out the match I'd be interested in going to is Turkey v Czech Republic.
Curva Fiesole

The touts in Germany were very well organised and wouldn't budge on prices - a friend who I went with had been to France 98, Euro 2000 and Euro 2004 and had never had these problems in the past. As England aren't there it might be different, but the grounds are a lot smaller than usual.

I applied for tickets via the UEFA lottery last year and they were massively oversubscribed so expect there to be lots of fans looking for not many tickets.

Also, keep an eye on ebay as plenty of tickets came up on there last time.

Half-Time: Spain 0-0 Italy

Toni had perfectly good goal disallowed for no reason...nothing changes
Duncan!

No big worries, but the age of the back line is a cause for concern perhaps.
Bobo32

Italy played as badly as England. Dont kid yourselves

Portugal 1-2 Greece

Perhaps not the most exciting prospect for a neutral, but I really recommend viewing, purely for two terrific goals from Karagounis.
