Good Things That Make Us Happy!

The creation of this site....
Mezz

There's no way that Myles can be as bas a moderator than the C4 tools... can he!?
Dave

I doubt it. If I could be ar$ed (I'm assuming that I've not just committed a serious sin which means I have to resign forthwith from the site by saying that), I'd write to the head of Channel 4 again.

I did about seven years ago when the moderators of the site developed a Goebbels complex and started banning people for no obvious reason and deleting all posts they didn't like; I also copied the letter to the then head of C4 Sport.

To my surprise, I recieved an extremely apologetic letter from the head of C4 saying that he was appalled at the apparent moderating fascism (not quite the phrase he used, but that was the gist), and the Sports bod would be replying in more detail after looking into the complaint; about two days later, the Sports chap sent an even more apologetic letter, saying that he'd looked at the complaint, and it was clear that something needed to be done (IIRC the words 'forum has become a bit of a mess, and I agree it needs to be dealt with' were used). Within about two weeks, we had new moderators.

The problem now, of course, is that C4 doesn't rely upon the number of hits the Footy foro gets to help its advertising; I know from inside info that the only reason the forum survived post the loss of the TV rights was because if they binned it, they'd lose a huge percentage of the weekly/monthly hits on the site, which they were boasting about to advertisers; upon discovering that the foro was in a state of near mutiny, they did something about it. Now, I suspect it doesn't matter to them, since Big Brother pulls in squillions of hits.

Of course, if the head of C4 were to recieve 25 outraged letters/e-mails about the way the forum has been handled, all saying something to the effect that this is symptomatic of the problems C4 has had recently with being honest with its viewers (the same people who partly fund the channel), and that the 25 people were all going to write to their MP to ask him/her to refer the matter to the broadcasting select committee, because it appears that C4 regards those who use its other services with contempt, then the effect might be interesting.

It occurs to me that if Channel 5 is doing Italian Football, perhaps (and Myles, being an astute chap is probably waaaaaay ahead of me on this) we shouldn't see if they'd like to advertise on this site, etc? Not only would this be a useful revenue step, the prospect of causing some grief to the high-handed and illiberal modertator(s) on the C4 forum by providing some competition would be amusing.

Edit - and I can edit my posts. Bliss is it now to be alive... (OK, Ok, perhaps that is overdoing it a tad...)
Mezz

Speaking of the tits that moderate the C4 forum, I received this e-mail about 10 hours ago from them relating to my suspension.

The top post was the one that got me banned:

"By registering with the Channel 4 website & forums, users agree to the Channel 4 Terms and Conditions of Use & Forum Rules which can be found here:

http://www.channel4.com/terms_and_conditions.html

Nobody gives a flying one. Haven't you got better things to be doing rather than posting links on a site that you and your retarded ilk have suffocated? I hear the BNP are recruiting for their latest political drive. Failing that, there's always Combat 18. Want to borrow some nails?

17-08-07 08:22
Not sure why the mods deleted the last thread, seeing as this will be the third year in a row that we've had a fantasy footie league and there's never been a problem before... Anyway, go HERE and enter the code 316297-63671 to join the FI Forum league.

I quite liked 'Origin of Symmetry' a few years ago (bought it on the back of 'Plug-In Baby'), but the notion passed fairly quickly and I never bought anything by Muse again. I also read an interview with Matthew Bellamy just after I bought the album, in which he came across as a complete tw@t, and I would venture that this went some way towards my interest in Muse dwindling. I've recently got into Death in Vegas. Again, I was drawn to them by a single ('Scorpio Rising' with a guest appearance by Liam Gallagher), and I've found that the same-titled album is pretty good. Need to a bit of hunting for their older stuff now.

06-01-06 14:36
I'm starting to think that the negativity and derision ultrastyle allegedly faces on a daily basis is less to do with the colour of his skin and more to do with him being a bit of a tw@t. You might want to try ending a post with insulting someone. See how you get on...

23-09-06 23:53
Why don't you just suck him off, Gio?

10-09-06 13:48
Only spineless tw@ts take defeat well. I have a feeling you're quite good at it though.

January 2006? Why didn't they pull me up back then!?
Dave

Since there's nothing in the rules about a certain of number of strikes and then you're out, it would seem there are two options:

1. That the moderator in question has simply trawled through your past posts for naughtiness and has used this to reinforce the reason for the ban - contrary to the impression given by the rules

2. C4s rules and regulations are misleading.

I can sort of see why they've removed posts pointing here and to the prediction championship, since they can use the catch alls that fall under

Quote:
Do Not post URLS in the forums. Official news sources and established company URLs are fine, but do not post personal websites.

Do Not try to use the forum to promote your website, business, dodgy money making scheme, hamster breeding farm or your lonely single self.

The problem here, of course, is that people using the News, Tinfoil Hat and Anti-Semitism Forum might chose to link to blogs that aren't official sources or company URLs. Would, for instance, linking to Michael Yon's blog about Iraq lead to a ban?

There are two conclusions - either the moderation team doesn't know what it's doing and is making vicarious use of the rules and t&cs (which seem mutually contradictory in places) to its own satisfaction, or that there's one moderator whose developed a bit of egomania.

Personally, I think I'd go nuclear on this and write to OFCOM, copying your detailed letter of complaint about misleading terms and conditions which give no indication of a naughtiness tally, moderation standards that show contempt for the C4 inter-active user, etc, etc to the head of Channel 4, highlighting the fact that some pretty virulent anti-semetism on the News Forum can go without banning, while a mildly rude word that is perfectly legitimate on Channel 4 pre-watershed programmes, or spirited argument leads to a ban.

If I was feeling really, really vindicitive, I'd wait for a couple of the most serious anti-semitic posts to appear and cc the letter (with quotations from the forum, times and dates and when the moderators got around to removing them - if at all) to the Board of Deputies of British Jews and to Lord Janner. I would then sit back and watch the firework display, which with Janner involved would be spectacular. You wouldn't, however, have the satisfaction of learning that the geek with the thick glasses and the Ceaser complex had been handed his P45 personally by the boss of C4. If the C4FI site is contracted to another body to run, then the results could be even more special....

The complaints have been around for longer than I thought - for instance, do you remember http://community.channel4.com/eve...ms/a/tpc/f/2576000511/m/987002319?

Also, look at the names on that thread of people who've simply given up in disgust....
Dave

Having done a quick search, it would appear that the C4 site is still under the auspices of the business run by John D Taylor - you might remember that he took over the site towards the end of C4's interest in Italian football (re-running the Dambusters, controversial dog's name and all, pulled in more viewers).

From this, I'd say that It's quite clear that suggesting that the forum is dying on its ar$e or linking to rival sites is going to lead to deletions, since it makes commercial sense to ensure that no links to competitors are permitted.

Also, and this is a very serious point (sorry), I think we need to look at two important issues.

The first is that the banner saying 'Football Italia' seems almost, if not completely identical to that on C4. IMHO, this simply has to be changed (sorry, Myles ), since it could be held to be an attempt to confuse would-be FI fans into logging onto the 'wrong' site, with commerical disadvantage to C4/JDT productions. There are potential compensation issues here, which would not be helfpul...

I'm not sure what the legal liabilities of administrators or moderators are, but Myles is presumably site owner, and could be in for an awkward time.

Second, the name may also have to change, for the simple reason that the JDT Productions website appears to suggest that the name 'Football Italia' is theirs to employ. If this is the case, then - again, we'd have to alter the forum name; better to do so now rather than later. It occurs to me that perhaps we could do this by renaming the forum after Marcello Chicarella (if his family agree, of course). The Marcello Chicarella Italian Football Forum (or Marcello's Italian Football Forum if you want a snappier acronym) would be a nice tribute to him and wouldn't have any legal issues to be disputed.

Sorry to offer a slightly po-faced assessment of this, but if we want the forum to work, then we have to do so on the basis that we simply can't violate copyright of C4 or JDT productions. The name is probaly covered by them, but unless Myles knows that the image used at top left is somehow out of copyright (or he owns the Intellectual Property for it and hasn't passed on his rights), then it simply has to be changed to avoid the risk of killing the site in a copyright battle before it's even started.
Mezz

I felt that the banner on top of the site was a bit risqué too along with the general name, but I admired Myles' front in 'sticking it to the man'.

Could we call it the 'Calcio Italia Forum', or is the magazine still called that?

How about 'The FI Forum', 'Calcio Corner', 'The MPC Calcio Forum', 'UK Calcio Forum' (I'm just running off lame suggestions here in the hope that one of them sticks).

I suppose Myles can settle on a name that he prefers, but the headline banner that appears to have been lifted directly from the main Football Italia site has to go, even if it is pretty cool...
Myles

Mezz wrote:

Maybe!

To be honest, i don't particularly care about the moderating, i just wanted to setup a forum where i could talk about italian football without not been able to really express myself or if i did, it'd get deleted.

I'll do the setup of the forum, but i won't be banning anyone for having a virtual fight.

Before editing or deleting someones post, i suggest looking from the perspective of the person who created the post.

I don't think there's a way of putting 'linking' advert banners on the template of the forum. Since, its a free site and our own ads would contravene the other ads that the myfastforum company put on the site. I look into that more tomorrow night.

Obviously, i can put a banner on, but it won't link to the C5 website. But i could do it out of spite to channel 4, but the FI website isn't shy on highlighting C5 anyway.

Anyway, looking for revenue for 10 registered members is a bit cheeky. :geek:

Forum name and banner

Yeah, 'borrowed' the previous banner i had on this site. I've changed the banner, just a quick job, but sure it'll do for now. If anyone has a banner they can email it to me.

As regards the name, i like the names with Marcello's name and the 'Calcio Corner' is catchy. Perhaps Marcello's Calcio Corner, anyways, would want to do it without the permission of Marcello's family, but i don't have a contact for them.

Btw, i might of set up the forum, but it's everyone's forum really. The name is not my decision, a collective decision. I'll change it to what the prefered option is.

I can only put linking-banners at the bottom of the forum (see the MPC Championship banner at the bottom of this page), so that wouldn't be much of an incentive to C5.

Suppose forum members could submit banners for their own websites and i can put them at the bottom of the forum.

Dear C4 communities,

Thanks for your reply.

Let me get this straight,

My account has been suspended for posting the following;

a link to a fantasy football game, based and Serie A.
rules for a game (based on Serie A) we've been playing on the forum for many years, on the 31st July, which doesn't even contravene forum rules.
a link to the dates and times of flights to football games in Italy, six months ago.
a link to the Channel 4 Football Italia song theme from the 90's, eight months ago.

If they were posted in one of the big brother forums i apologise.
I don't have the best memory, can you remind me which forum i posted these italian football related issues?
Thanks, regards,
Myles

However, obviously you have come into possession of documentation proving that i do actually own the soccernet website, so can you please forward this documentation onto me so i can claim the profits from the company which operates the soccernet website?

Thanks, regards,

I was in Bristol for the cricket yesterday. It wasn't as boring as I thought it would be but that was mainly due to the banter between my group and our lively Indian fans to our right. Since the start all they were chanting was "Satchin, Satchin!" so when he was caught out on 99 runs we all turned to face them whilst repeating the same chant.
Talk about eating humble pie.

Just the f and the c words are sensored. Dont' really see the point in sensoring out anything else, but it depends on peoples' perception i suspose.

The admins on this site can't really spend all their time going through everthing, so it's up to other members to report it, if someone comes on attacking anyone.

I wouldn't be in favour of banning people for cursing though, that's just my opinion though, but if we started doing that we might aswel go back to the C4 forum.
ForzaFiori

Well it's nice to finally have an understanding of what the hell has been going on with the old foro. I've been struggling to get on the old foro for months now, it never loads or if i'm lucky i get to post one message before it crashes.
I put it down to loads of numpties discussing the (non-existant) finer points of a posh spice clone and Kieran Richardson's mental cousin and overloading the system.
Hearing everyone else's stories about suspensions for daft reasons has me wondering if I got suspended, seeing as i couldn't use the forum. Any emails they sent me would have gone to a now defunct address.

Let me know if you want me to ask. x
Myles

Yeah, that'd be great verno, thanks!
Dave

Gio, just to add to Myles' thoughts, may I suggest using the 'Radio 4 Rule'. If it has been used on the 6.30 comedy slot (BTW, not by you shouting obscenities at the Now Show) then there is no reason why we should be more puritanical than the guardian of respectibility that is R4.

'Cock' has been made acceptable by James May's frequent use of it on Top Gear, even if it hasn't appeared on R4 yet.

While 'W@nk' hasn't yet made it onto R4, it is allowable since 'w@nkers' appeared on Countdown several years ago and C4 chose to show it (both contestants produced the word, prompting an uncomfortable looking Richard Whitely to make it worse/funnier by being unable to avoid saying 'Ah-ha, a pair of w@nkers!')

I'll still stick in asterisks to prevent falling into the trap of getting used to writing words in full and then doing so on another forum I post on and getting banned for it, but I see no reason why those not wishing to write out in full shouldn't.

He is player that inter could play well with adriano at left back because he kick strong and ibrihamevic in goal because of tallness.

All is good down in SE7 at the moment. Sod being 2nd in the league, Millwall lose 4-0 at Carlisle, are rooted to the foot of League One and sack their manager.

And to top it off Palace in 19th go and so the same. But even better, the inimitable Simon Jordan brings a new meaning to the word "winner"...

We need an injection of something and someone like Neil Warnock will give us that. He's a winner and I'm a winner.

That why you left 10 minutes before the end while we were beating you on your own patch then? Yet again?

I've also enjoyed the RWC, which has shown that the game is developing in countries outside of the usual eight - Argentina have been a breath of fresh air. IF England can play to their full potential on Saturday, keep the ball with the forwards and avoid the temptation to throw the ball wide, then I believe we can win it again - we've managed to frustrate both the Aussies and the French with this style of rugby, so why can't we do it to the Springboks as well?

Also enjoying Gloucester being top of the league again (although I'm sure we'll lose in the play-offs again )

Group B is tighter than a fish's arse. I expect the Scots, after a great effort, to be unlucky and not qualify. The Italians, via a penalty from a dive, will win in Scotland and of course beat the Faroe Islands - the Italians and French thereby qualifying. Ukraine have nowt to play for so the French, having been utter rubbish, will go through. Even though I'm English and not a glory-hunter, it would be rather fun if the Scots qualified and we didn't, just to rub it in how much pestilence and abomination is at play in the England side. We also need another big boy - Italy, world champions? - to fail with us.

The entire world's problems can be laid at Steven Gerrard's door (missing a header from 8 yards out unmarked). I can hardly type I'm so angry.

GTTMUH: Went to an Arcade Fire concert last night, very good.

Gary Megson leaves Leicester.

Wonderful news. He was leading the club nowhere with his reluctance to atleast attempt to score a goal at home. Away draws are fine, but unless they're backed up with home wins you might as well not bother. I am 100% certain he will get Bolton relegated.

Phil Jaques gets 100 on his return to the Australian test team. Ricky gets a 50 too, as Australia get the upper hand against Sri Lanka at the Gabba.

Shame some people continue to shout "no-ball" when Murali is bowling, it's a bit embarrassing. He is going to take more wickets than Warne, we need to get over it and appreciate this fantastic cricketer and appreciable man.

One of my best mates has announced she is having a baby. I always knew she'd be the first.

Is he married ?
Dels

McClaren has been sacked!

Shame he didn't have the guts to resign rather than get a nice pay-off and I can't see where he will end up now.

Lippi for England manager??

Come on mate...would you resign knowing that you'll be sacked in a matter of hours and receive a MASSIVE pay-off???

It's the best decision Second Choice Steve ever made, pity he didn't display similar savvy in his job.

I think the best suggestion I've heard so far was an email to sky sports news which advocated a Stuart Pearce/Alan Shearer combination. The writer's logic was that, being as one was a defender and one was a striker, England will be able to defend and score goals.

I'm listening to a conversation here in the cafe about Hibernian reaching the champions league, apparantly they can do it if the old firm can. I have to stop myself from laughing out loud at these fools.

Now Manure are the best team in europe. These guys are killing me.
