General Serie A

Just setting up a place to talk about Serie A and Italian football in general.

If you'd like to talk about a club that doesn't have its own thread, or simply prefer to discuss Italian club football in a neutral zone this is the place to do so!

I fear for Parma after that defeat. Donadoni hanging by a thread...........................

Good to see Empoli beat Nazio as well (as I predicted but I do put them to lose most weeks).
Liam

I do feel for Parma a bit too (not about today though!).  Being thrown out of the Europa League seemed harsh (although I'm not fully aware of the facts), and that seems to have killed morale.  Once they went 2-0 down today there wasn't a lot of fight in them.
Dels

This weekend Di Natale scored his 200th Serie A goal.

He might not be a Del Piero or a Totti but he's a legend in his own way.
Dels

The Milan derby at the weekend was hilarious.

It's quite amusing that British media outlets such as the BBC still highlight this game as if it's between 2 of Italian football's best teams.

It just isn't right now.  They'll both rise again, but right now they're in full rebuild mode.

Myles wrote:
Great goal from Peres in fairness.

It reminds a bit of the famous George Weah goal, albeit it was a run down the wing, as opposed to one through the middle of the pitch.
Dels

That was a fantastic goal by Peres. It's pretty much gone unnoticed this week. But if it was scored by Ronaldo or Messi it would be going viral.
Myles

Cesena will feel hard done by with this peno.
Maybe he was clipped.

I don't think the ref could see because of the fog!
Myles

I see Maxi Lopez assisted the goal for Torino's 94th minute winner against Inter. Guess who was marking Lopez?...Icardi †
Duncan!

Dels

Well Sassuolo has eased the pain of Murray getting beat. How the mighty have fallen.†
Dels

Is Parma a goner? What's going on there? The situation is confusing.

If they go bust what happens to the official results?
Duncan!

Just put them out of their misery already.   It's stupid.   Just pretend they weren't playing all season.
Myles

Carpi have won promotion 4 times in the last 5 seasons to get into Serie A, wow!

A warm welcome to Serie A to both Carpi and Frosinone †for the 2015/2016 season.

It could be an interesting final week in serie B (I think only one match left). Any team from 13th to 20th could get relegated. I hope Vicenza get promoted. Only because they play in red & white stripes!

yep, here's the table as it stands

Duncan!

Luca Toni!  He must be immortal  lol
Myles

There's a lot of aspects of this season that was good. I thought the standard was good.

Only bad blot was Icardi being top scorer, but sometimes assholes prevale.

Forza 38 Year Old Toni!
Dels

I wanted Tevez for get the top goal scorer obviously but this is just great for Toni, great achievement.
Duncan!

It's hard to think he was leading scorer in 2006 and led the Azzurri line in the WC and now again leading scorer in 2015!

PS  I still think Toni's waived off goal in the Final against France was not offside and should have counted
Tangerine Romanista

I know last season was a bit of an outlier with Juve reaching the CL final and the English clubs all doing fairly poorly, but it's interesting to see how close the UEFA Club Rankings are:

http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/

England will lose their 3.9 gap from 2011/12 soon as well....

It's certainly a big season ahead for Italian clubs in Europe.
Dels

I post this here because Andrea Pirlo transcends club rivalries.

I watched my first MSL last night, New York City and Orlando City, only because Pirlo signed for the former.

When Pirlo started warming up, you could hear the fans in the Yankee Stadium chanting "We want Pirlo" and when he came on every touched got cheered. I got emotional.

But of course Americans know nothing about "soccer", right...But last night they saw greatness and acknowledged it.

Greatest Italian Midfielder ever, the legend, the Artiste, †the Maestro.

Forza Andrea Pirlo

Bet their was a lot of Italian-Americans in the crowd to see the maestro

And people who know their soccer and know when they see a legend of the sport.

Nice to see Lazio having a terrible pre-season, long may it continue. Hopefully out of the CL by the end of August which (fingers crossed, touch wood etc etc) would mean more dosh for Roma from UEFA.
VB

Juve defeated... at home (that fortress - damn!), Milan losing on the opening day, Mario 'the dick' returning, Lazio (i don't share most of you guy's disliking towards him and besides - Coefficien points, or whatever they're called, were at stake) ... it's all going so horribly wrong and it's only just bloody started
Dels

Don't fret. Juve will still win the league. †

Lazio, I don't dislike them either but they did have a hard tie. Nobody wanted Leverkusen. After Man Utd and Valencia, Leverkusen were the best team in the play-offs.

Btw post more VB. Don't be a stranger. †
Tangerine Romanista

Was a significant week for the Italian teams co-efficients, by my reckoning (and I could be wrong...) the 3 wins for the Italian clubs in the Europa League last night puts them just ahead of England when you remove the 2011/12 season totals.

http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/

Very interesting times ahead!
Lupo Pazzesco

It looks like Montella is taking over at Samp according to most italian media outlets. Good luck Vincenzo!
Myles

Lunatic season!
Dels

To fair its turning into a normal Serie A season since Juventus have stopped trolling everyone.

x100000000 for tonight.
Liam

Whilst it's very difficult to keep track, I reckon Palermo are about to change coach for atleast the 7th time this season.

Whereas before Zamparini seemed to atleast wait for a poor run of form to change coach, all it seems to take these days is one defeat, even if it's away at Inter or someone else near the top.
Myles

It's gas how he said De Laurentiis doesn't know anything about football when he's one of the better presidents and Zamparini is literally the worst.

It's kind of the fans fault too for putting up with such crap, why don't they ever revolt?
Liam

In the latest article on FI he says:
Quote:
This week Iíll resign, because Iím fed up.

And then goes on to say:
Quote:
in June I will leave. I might even quit next week.

He's becoming a caricature of himself.
Dels

That own goal by Sassuolo.
Lupo Pazzesco

A nice touch in Turin today in renaming the stadium to Grande Torino. A monument to a great team!
Liam

Nothing against the other teams down near the bottom, but it'd be great if atleast one of Frosinone and Carpi stayed up.

Both have caused Juve problems this season, and after Lotito's attitude towards them last year it'd show that they deserved Serie A.
Myles

I would've liked to see Verona stay up because i like the town.

I want Palermo to go down because of Zamparini, but if he wasn't there i'd like them to stay up just so all corners are represented.
Lupo Pazzesco

After Roma's early afternoon KO, there's the Genoa derby which is always one of my favourite matches. There's always a different feeling to the game somehow than other city ones. Good luck to both sides

Sampdoria 0 - 3 Genoa!
Lupo Pazzesco

I knew you'd be happy! About as comprehensive a derby result as it gets.......
Lupo Pazzesco

Joe Hart to Torino is an interesting & brave decision which will hopefully work out well for him & the club. I really hope he learns the language and settles in quickly as he really needed to get away from Guardiola's Shitty!
Dels

I hope that it works out at Torino for Hart too.
He was a good servant for City and didn't deserve the treatment he got from Guardiola. His last game for City being a dead rubber tie was just cruel. There was no need. I don't understand why Guardiola felt the need to humiliate him like that. It would have been kinder just kicking Hart in the nuts. Maybe Guardiola's trying to grow a pair of balls by picking on a goalie because he has to go up against Mourinho again?! †

During the Turin derby Hart might learn something from the master goalie, so he probably won't be wasting any time there.
Lupo Pazzesco

I've just watched some of the Torino match from yesterday and they were on fire!
Lupo Pazzesco

Genoa & Atalanta on fire now as well as Torino plus Milan. It's suddenly very crowded at the top of Serie A.
Liam

I'm happy for Gasperini, a great coach whose work is a key part of Genoa cementing themselves in Serie A again over the last decade.  He's a good fit for Atalanta.
Duncan!

nice young talent at Atalanta.  Sassuolo does as well when they are healthy
Lupo Pazzesco

Atalanta selling some of the crown jewels and well below their true value as well unfortunately. In their position I'd have asked for a lot more! I wonder how much it will take to get Kessie?
Lupo Pazzesco

Whilst I don't expect a lot football wise, the Genoa derby should be fun tonight! I'll be watching avidly......hopefully plenty of drama, incident & goals!?!?!
Myles

Well...any good?
I know it finished 0-1 but was it a decent game?
Duncan!

It was pretty good I thought.
Lupo Pazzesco

Cracking atmosphere throughout the game & a great winning goal, what's not to like? I enjoyed it.
Myles

I see the matches next season will look something like this;
Italian times.

Friday 8:45
Saturday 12:30, 6 and 8:45
Sunday 3pm (3 games), 6 and 8:45
Monday 8:45

Good to see they are finally realizing that the money comes from TV rights all around the world, not just Italy. Had they'd copped this 20 years ago they wouldn't have fallen behind in the first place.

Now if they could just give the first 6 months fixtures and stick to them then maybe they'd get more demand for match tickets from abroad too.
Liam

So a Friday night game every week?

I like that, but not Monday nights.  I never want to watch football on a Monday for some reason.
Myles

The Crotone banner today!

Luftwaffles

That was a good point for Milan. Montella will have to spend heavily in the upcoming transfer window. They are well behind Roma, Juventus and Napoli.
Liam

Well done Crotone, an amazing comeback to survive.  As has been stated I think some teams like Genoa and Empoli got complacent in the middle of the season.

I find it funny as well that Crotone kept the same coach all season, which isn't something that usually happens in any league.
