Forza Napoli!

(I'VE MERGED THIS THREAD TOGETHER WITH A COUPLE OF OTHER OLD NAPOLI THREADS WE'VE HAD IN THE PAST - IT'S AT 3 PAGES ALREADY! - SO THAT ALL PARTENOPEI FANS CAN UNITE UNDER ONE BANNER - MEZZ 28/03/2010)

What ambitions does De Laurentis have for Napoli?

I remember when he bought the club in 2004 he said that there would be Champions League football in Naples within 5 years.

Are they just going to taper off to mid table obscurity?
Guest

They've built up a strong nucleus of young Italian and South American players relatively cheaply, plus a few more experienced leaders like Domizzi and Cannavaro. The only way to get into the CL straight off is by spending big, which in the long run (and possibly short) is gonna leave the club a lot worse off. And after their own money problems, they've definitely taken the right route.

Presuming they keep on this track, continue spending wisely and don't go OTT on wages, a top 6 finish or maybe better is probably only a couple of years off, on which they can build further. I'm not sure if Reja will still be there to oversee it all though.
Guest

They're not really giants,m though, are they?

Massive city, passionate fans, big stadium, but apart from the Maradona years, they've never done much.

Nice shirt, though.

Thanks for the reply.  They're employing the Arsenal route of "good husbandry" makes sense as you say given their history of bankruptcy.  Back in the UEFA Cup too http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug1i.html

Maybe they've underachieved (the Newcastle of Italy?) but you have to think that with the right investment they can establish themselves as a perennial powerhouse.  Only Roma, Inter and Milan have a higher average at the gate.

Btw, you'll have a blast at the game out there, good luck to you (lucky bastad!)
Liam

Napoli will struggle to break the top 5 like the likes of Palermo, Udinese, Sampdoria and Lazio will.  I do feel in the long term they've got a better chance of doing it than the other teams I mentioned though.
Guest

I fancy napoli for a top 6 finish this year! Maggio was a great signing for them. Haven't seen much of Denis but he looks a very useful player!

Duncan!

I think Napoli can achieve a consistent top 6 performance if they stay on the present path.   Maybe occasionally challenge for a CL every once in a while.   I hope so at least,    Main goal has to be to achieve a level of consistency on the field and in the finances.

If they could upgrade the San Paolo would be nice as well.

Although a Roma tifoso, my family hails from Napoli and always kind of liked them and followed them.  Unusually though, I never liked or could stand Maradona.

More of a Careca, Bagni, Ferrara fan.
Guest

Like every one else I don't believe that Napoli will finish in the top 4 this year although 5th place could be a realistic target as we could of easily disposed of Roma if we had a numerical advantage. The key to success in football is to be realistic and I believe Napoli are doing just that there not going over there heads with excitement  but are always looking onwards and upwards.
Quote:

The chairman has already asked to build a new stadium but it was turned down by the local council apparently they wanted to name it Stadio Diego Maradona but an official announced that if there where to do that the player must be dead for at least 10 years....o well at least they tried.
Guest

I understand Napoli wanting a new stadium but sometimes I think that teams try to leave their old historic venue too soon and then end up downgrading in capacity. The San Paolo is the third biggest stadium in Italy behind the Olimpico and San Siro and from what I understand, Napoli has some of the best attendances in Serie A so why build a new stadium?
Yes the San Paolo has a running track but I cant call it a particularly badly designed stadium (in the mold of say the Delle Alpi)..

Anyway I hope Napoli can continue to buck the trend of falling attendences in serie A.. its always good to see a sleeping giant back.. to be honest, nearly all of the title winning teams are back in Serie A and this makes for quite the spectacle.. not to mention many many derbies

Gutted that I'll be ion Napoli for Napoli v Fiorentina next week, but probably won't get in because of the nutter ultras getting ticket sales suspended...anyone know the latest with the ban situation?

I'm in the same position, I will be in NApoli but not sure how I will manage to get a ticket.  Need to try and jib in somehow.

I know P. Cannavaro is not as good as Fabio, but he has got to be better than Barzagli?   Why not call him up to La Nazionale
Guest

cause when Lippi has favourites, or when he doesnt like a player they have absolutely zero interest to him... eg panucci or cassano..

he is a great tactician but i always thought he had too many personal problems with players...
someone like capello just strikes me as being sour overall, not so much problems with one or 2 players in particular..
Duncan!

See the great Baggio's opinions on Lippi
Guest

No Duncan where can i see these opinions???
Duncan!

Read his book... Il Codino is not a big fan of Lippi needless to say...

I think Napoli are getting screwed in this whole stadium bans.   Holds the whole team hostage to the whims of a few mafioso
Roma Girl

The 2 Curvas and the away sections will be closed.  The rest of the stadium will be open.
Duncan!

Napoli is getting screwed.  It didn't even happen in the San Paolo
Guest

Anyone seen or read Gomorrah?  It sounds awesome - it's supposed to be a more realistic Goodfellas set around the Camorra in Naples. Apparently one of the actors has been arrested for his links to the mafia and the writer has been in hiding for 2 year with a price on his head...!

I've been out of the loop over the summer, had 101 things going on, I kept hearing that Lavezzi was a target for Chelsea amongst others.  Imma google right now to see whats up with that.

Glad the football season is here finally, cricket, Wimbledon etc. is      y boring!

Donadoni has to be the first coach to be axed this season
nino

I don't think they should have got rid of Edy Reja. Especially not for Donadoni. Has Reja got himself another job yet? Maybe Milan should have given him a shot.
DP

Couldn't agree more - Napoli seem devoid of a defence

and as i type, Lucio gets another for Inter
Liam

Their decision to get rid of Reja was stupid and so typical of presidents in Italian football.  Rushed and thoughtless.
Duncan!

getting rid of Reja was not that bad.  It was the hiring of Donadoni.  He sucks

Napoli v Roma

A group of 6 or so of us are hoping to come over to Naples in February for the Napoli v Roma match. What are the chances of getting match tickets for this game as I know it's a high security game. Many thanks
Guest

Napoli's defence?

Quick question....

What's Napoli's first choice defence? Or specifically their central defence. Is it Paolo Cannavaro and Hugo Campagnaro?

Dossena and Aronica are left backs; Maggio, Grava and Zuniga are right backs I think. That leaves Rinaudo, Campagnaro, Santacroce, Contini and Cannavaro for two central positions, right?

That's assuming they play four at the back, which looking at it again might be wrong.
DP

I thought they often played with 3 at the back ?  - Cannavaro, Campagnaro and Contini - might be totally mistaken...
Guest

Yea I know they play three at the back, I think it's some variation of a 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 which is great to watch especially at the San Paolo when they really commit most of their team to the attacking moves. They deserve a bit more respect than they get for their attacking philiosophy
Guest

Thanks for clearing that bit up lads. I haven't seen Napoli play but they deserve tremendous credit for their success this season.

Forza Napoli!

Hi calcio fans. New to this forum, and also fairly new to seria a football. Anyway, just watched Napoli v Catania (28/3/2010), and wanted to no, what people's views are on a late napoli champions league push. Juventus have come under the cosh from Napoli, and today, Napoli beat catania, 1-0 which could have been more in my opinion. The second half most notably was controlled by Napoli, with chances from the scorer cannavaro, quagliarelli, and hamsik which could have piled the pressure onto catania. However, at times, maxi lopez was given too much space by the defence. A chance of note by lopez, was luckily smothered by the napoli keeper. So a Napoli champions leaguepush anyone?

Anyway, hope people enjoy reading this, and i look forward to posting articles in the future.
DP

You're a Reading supporter ??? Are you from Reading ?

I enjoy watching Napoli play since Mazzarri took over - In terms of the CL spot, i think Palermo are going to cement their position in coming weeks - Napoli and Juve have potentially tricky ties, week's 34 and 35 will have a large impact on the final standings.

I completely agree. Ive always said this. He plays the full 90 hard and strong. Idk how much more Lippi is expecting. Paolo would be an asset and to be quite honest to exclude him would be a right shame.
Myles

He should be playing instead of his brother.

Actually, in a present realistic scenario, you couldn't do too much better than a PCanna/Cheillini partnership in defence for the Azzurri

Great result tonight for Napoli when you consider they were at one point 3 goals down away to Steaua Bucuresti!

In fact, its been a pretty decent week for Italian clubs in Europe. And even better: Serie A has gained quite a few more points than the Bunderliga during this week's lot of European games.

Yay! Other English speaking Napoli fans! I'm from Denmark and I have been following the team for around 20 years and still do so vividly. As late as yesterday I jumped around in my living room when the news got to me that Lavezzi had scored against Cagliari.

I have a blog on Italian football together with a mate of mine. It's called Pondering Calcio and can be found here: http://ponderingcalcio.net/

A while ago I wrote a critical piece on our home stadium San Paolo. Read if you like:

I didn't see any of the Lazio match (6am Eastern Time here in the States and I work nights)... but it sounded like they were pretty out of it from the get go.  Tough loss... Now vs the real contenders this year, that's a loss to Milan and Lazio

Yeah - Napoli were ok in the first half, but didn't seem that fresh really in the second. It's not that we didn't create chances, but the spirit didn't really seem to be there.

When I hit a hundred depends on a couple of things like work letting me have a Tuesday off for Rochdale away, if not it'll be next season. Am gonna try seeing Ajax this season too.

Anyway, back on topic... I half watched the match tonight. Genoa had the more shots but Napoli looked a lot more composed and I thought were deserved of their win. Good turnout from the Napoli tifo as well! Would be a good game to see that, with it being a gemelaggio.

If they can keep grinding out results like that then the Champs League definitely isn't out the question.

Thanks! One advantage of Charlton's rise and demise has been that I've seen a lot of the country.

Ha, not a happy hunting ground for us! The first time I went, my dad took me for my 6th birthday... We lost 3-1
Guest

That list is immense, much kudos.

One thing though, who the hell names their stadium after the standard bearer of corrupt FIFA officials, Joao Havelange??

I can see there being a Sepp Blatter memorial stadium in Qatar for 2022.
Guest

Grazie Just noticed the 80 and 90 are out of place, just grouped countries together rather than trying to sneak more in!

The Havelange is Rio's community stadium, Botafogo play there but don't own it. I think he still has a big say in Brazil so probably named it after himself, especially since the olympics is being hosted there.

yes - as a result of drawing too many games. in fact, they've drawn more games than they have won, which would explain juve's exit from europe and why they're 6 points off top spot in serie a. juve will probably draw again next weekend. ready.... aim.... fire....

The result away vs. Genoa is a result just as we want them when we don't play that well. The defence was good, which is somewhat rare, and we scored on one of our few chances. Now we "just" have to beat Lecce home to have a wonderful Christmas in the top of the table.
