Football Italia website

This is a topic for your complaints, praise and advice about the website. We're interlinked and it is nice to get an honest opinion about our work.

Starting off, what do you think of the new image macros in our Quotes of the Week page?
Guest

don't like it, pictures add nothing.

Can you amend your video section, either add some highlights to the footage or change the name to goals package.
zeds

The dude has a real weird jaw, looks kinda creepy. The quotation marks appearing looks a bit tacky.
Great idea to have a quotes section though. Gives a good flavour on topical issues.
nino

I've always hated that shade of bright green running down the left hand side of the page but I suppose I've learned to love (ignore) it now.

Some of the graphics are a bit tacky, like the above mentioned "flashing quotes" header and the swooshy football image on the home page.

There's far too many different fonts being used in the small image gifs for different sections. The live scores one is alright because it suits but the rest would look better with a chosen typeface across the board.

Oh and your desktop wallpaper selection could do with summat a bit classier. The majority of those would give me a headache on my desktop.

Gosh it's like being over at the design forum.

Aside from some visual aspects I've always like the layout of the site, be it a little busy. I just think the graphics should be a bit less "shoot magazine" and a bit more stylish Italian.

Maybe readers might appreciate an RSS feed. I know that's popular among news sites. People who sign up to RSS love their news delivered to them, but then maybe it might cut down on C4's traffic and ad revenue. I dunno, I'm not up on my web statistics.

Personally i don't like all the flashing banners, just one for the Live Scores would be my preference as this is the most important feature of all the flashy's, i just think too many flashy's is a bit head-wrecking.
flotron

I really hate the popover flash adverts but that'll be a C4 thing and nothing to do with you guys, simple google ads would be fine.

You really just need to sneakly put a link in for this forum rather than the C4 forum. That's all I ask...

Misleading headlines/taking quotes out of context. I know headlines are there to catch the reader's attention, but they can give the wrong impression. eg. the Van Basten one today.

Isn't that what you go to journalism school to learn?
Guest

It's one of the better websites anyway..I find that there isn't enough info on European football on sky and bbc websites and top marks for securing the highlights everyweek.

Just one thing, maybe more all time XI's and updated tv coverage(I know there isn't much but the Inter-Milan game is still advertised and it's the 4th of March)
Liam

To be fair, there's no TV coverage to update.

Good job on the Luciano Moggi interview in the magazine as well.  Nice to see the other side of Calciopoli, so often ignored by the media, getting some coverage.

Agree with you on that one Liam, good to hear from the defence for a change. Also I was delighted to see the piece on Verona in this months mag..know all thats needed for total satisfaction is survival
Myles

I see Jon Palmer has taken over from John D Taylor as the editor of the magazine.

Are the chaps at FI going to be starting a 'Calcio Mercato' guide as they have one in the past, with all the clubs and the various players shifting about ?
Myles

I think the official date of the opening of the transfer window is 1st July, maybe the FI team are waiting until then.

If you're feeling nostalgic you can peruse through last years Calcio Mercato!
DP

Cheers Myles, much appreciated
flotron

LoL i guess football italia just noticed it was still there... it seems to have been pulled now. Hopefully that means there will be a version for this season.

I found it very useful last season, i do hope it does return

In the meantime, here's a handy list courtesy of Wiki:

I'd prefer if the home page didn't have the omnisport video starting automatically because it takes too long to load the page on some connections. Videos starting automatically on homepages is a no no for the userend. Instead it should be static with the option for the user to turn on the video. Seriously, this is not good practise.

Regarding the mag, Inter supporters will be happy to know that Susy's 'The Last Word' got the chop, however i think there should be more (as in not less) opinion articles in the mag, in fact i think all the mag's journalists should have an opinionated article.
nino

Is the website still having a redesign or what? It's gone a bit quiet. The (excellent) Twitter addition was great, hopefully an RSS feed as well.

We are also now on Facebook.

Oh yes I saw that, I'm already there.

I've resolved this by installing the Stop Autoplay add-on for Firefox.
It prevents the omnisport flash from starting automatically thus loading the Football Italia website much quicker which is useful to anyone not on a landline 1:1 connection ratio (ie. mobile broadband).
The good thing about this add-on is that i don't have to uninstall the flash player or move the flash players files out of the library, and then reinstall or move the files back again everytime i want to view a flash file.

I seriously urge FI to stop the autoplay from their end for a number of reasons, the most obviously being;

Userend
  1. Get pissed off waiting for the for the webpage(s) to load
  2. Uses bandwidth

FI end
  1. Uses bandwidth (upping the cost for website hosted on a 'only-pay-for-what-you-use' contract) [ignore this if it's omnisport paying for the bandwidth]
  2. It's generally accepted that Google's search engine algorithim weights pageloading time higher than most other variables in it's algorithim
  3. Bad practice (infact web developers would laugh at such a practice)
  4. Pisses off your visitors

Every web developer thinks it's great at the outset because they think it makes their website look more 'flashy' and dynamic, but when the novelty wears off they realise the disadvanges outweigh the novelty of it all.

One time i was browsing the FI website for 45mins before i went onto any other website. I didn't visit the FI website again for about a week until i had cooled off.
Myles

Got a reply to the above...

Basically the autoplay generates revenue, whereas if the videos aren't autoplay then they don't generate money.

So fair enough.
Guest

Can't be much traffic on the Football Italia website these days. I've been the 999,999 person to visit the site......... all month.........

I can understand needing ads for $ but low class crap ads that try and bullsh!t ya
Guest

Got to be honest and say the omni sport video is a pretty useful advert to have on the FI website. My broadband connection is sufficient to be able to play the video smoothly and not slow down the web page loading so I get to see the goals of the previous weekend on a website dedicated to the feature of the advert on display.

But as Ferri says, the pokerstars et al adverts that are displayed are monotonous, especially when they cover what you're trying to read.
Myles

More and more people are using mobile broadband now, in Ireland it accounts for 57% of internet subscriptions now, and since the connection ratio is always poor the customer never gets next nor near the connection speed that the ISP advertises, and certainly nothing like a landline connection speed, but i do agree that the autoplay is actually a good feature in the way Micky described, on a good connection, though as more people switch to more mobile devices (ie netbooks), the more people will get pissed off with the autoplay. Unfortunately the technology for broadband speed doesn't improve as quick (or at least doesn't get implemented as quickly) as that of devices so we are going through a period when mobile broadband isn't fast enough to cope with the large number of people that will be/are using mobile devices, and that's when the autoplay will annoy a lot of visitors to the FI site. Infact websites can be made very dynamic nowadays but some companies purposely limit this because the connection speeds and infact browsers can't keep up quick enough with the coders, so while it's good coding it's bad practise. It's more understandable though when it's needed to generate revenue, so i put up with it from that respect.

I was wondering why this forum isn't more visible on www.football-italia.net. I'm sure it'll generate a lot of users here. Is it because you want to be independent?
Mezz

It's a long, long story... but sit tight.
Guest

I've been sitting tight since Thursday. :p
Mezz

You may want to get up and stretch your legs from time to time then, as you could be in for a long wait still...
Curva Fiesole

In the immortal words of Tony Hadley, to cut a long story short:

Most of us used to be mebers of the FI Forum on the Football Italia website in the days when it was run by Channel 4.  Over time, the moderation of the site became more and more draconian to the point where a number of us received bans for quite minor indiscretions.

In 2007, Myles set this forum up and we migrated over, since when the FI Forum has closed down. Myles maintains dialogue with the FI website and you will see their postings on here from time to time.

Ok I see. I also wondered why such a big website didn't have a forum. It would be awesome if a forum like this, which is dedicated to Italian football in general and not only a certain club, had more users and was easier to find.
DP

FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SORT OUT THOSE ADS ON THE FI SITE

EVERY PAGE HAS THAT EMBEDDED EPLAYER THAT STARTS REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU WANT IT TO OR NOT

IT'S ALMOST AS ANNOYING AS SOMEONE TYPING AN ENTIRE MESSAGE IN CAPITALS.

I FEEL VIOLATED
nino

It annoys me because sometimes it slows the site down before it gets going. And when you have as slow a connection as mine you can't leave a page for friggin ages once the player's sterted. Very annoying.
Myles

Also the sound on the video is automatically turned on by default which is really bad practice on any website because some people might be visiting the site from their work PC and might not want the boss to hear football news playing when they are suppose to be working.
Duncan!

I thought I was the only one pissed off about that

My work PC doesn't have speakers.

Not that I have ever used the internet when I should be working.

Being serious, those adverts are very annoying.
Guest

The video clips' sound is also quite irritating. The adverts with sound are gone, thank God, but hearing the summary of Groningen - Willem II is also a tad annoying when you're trying to focus on reading something actually related to Italian football. Other than that I love the site.

It was even worse the other day.  I went on the site only to have Massimo Moratti talking at me.

Give me the new Passatt advert for the 20,000,000th time any day.

Too true.

Nice blog by the way
Guest

rubbish. absolute rubbish. I dont wanna hear Leonardo sum up the Roma game on every page. Is this some sort of psychological battle to make Inter fans resent their manager?
Lupo Pazzesco

Myles

That's not a football
Guest

At least I haven't seen the bouncing tennis ball for a while now. Maybe it was just during Wimbledon?
nino

Are they ever gonna update that website's design? It's badly in need of a refresh. I thought there was talk of it happening before.
flotron

whoo, new fresh look and rss included!
nino

Yes, great additions such as RSS and comments to blog without the need for email. Still, the design is far from perfect unfortunately and still looks about seven years old. I don't think there was a proper designer involved. No offence FI. I still love you very much. I might just have to keep you as an RSS feed.
Liam

Being able to comment on the blogs without e-mail is a good, if obvious new feature.

It even seems quicker, despite those stupid videos still being there.
nino

Oh dear, not a great feed either. Only headlines + a pic come in to Google Reader (so what's the point?) and when I signed it up it just said 'title unknown'. A bit shoddy all over.
Guest

Looks ok on PC but I mostly view on my iPhone, and there's no mobile site.
Myles

Anyone else experiencing the issue where the livescores page http://www.football-italia.net/livescores only loads the scores as far down as Germany then cuts off the rest of the countries?

Just wondering if it's a local issue on my machine or an issue with the website.

It keeps adding this anchor #inscore_ifheight_xdc_22187 to the url and even if i increase the value to higher than 22187 it still keeps reverting back to that value
Lupo Pazzesco

Same problem for me Myles.
Myles

Cheers for the reply Lupo. At least i know it's not a local issue then. So i'll report it to Antonio and Susy then just so they're aware of it. Might be able to get it sorted.

Football Italia App - old version 3.6.1 available for download

For anyone who is using the Football Italia android app and preferred the old version, then here it is.
I found the old version on my old Samsung S2 so i used an apk extractor to copy it.

Here's what you do to install it on your phone;

Step 1: Uninstall the latest version app.

Step 2: Disable automatic updates on your apps.
  1. Open the Play Store app on your Android and slide out the left menu.
  2. Open the settings, and look for the entry labeled Auto-update apps. Tap on it, and you'll have the choice to update apps over Wifi only, update apps over any connection or to turn off automatic updates.
  3. Select Do not auto-update apps.
    Ref: http://m.androidcentral.com/updating-apps-through-google-play

Step 3: Install the old version 3.6.1 on your phone.
  1. Download the zip file from here > https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4d2ct1...kb/AAAU5OxkZ91DO5lhpQhW_9h6a?dl=0
  2. Extract the zip file
  3. You should now see a file named com.footballitalia.mobile_3.6.1_V121.apk
    • 3.6.1 is the Google Play version.
    • 121 is the developers version
    • .apk is the standard format for Android apps

  4. Connect your phone to your PC/Laptop and copy the file com.footballitalia.mobile_3.6.1_V121.apk onto your phone (maybe the Downloads folder on your phone)
  5. Navigate to the folder on your phone and tap on the file.
    It will then install.
