(I'VE MERGED THIS THREAD TOGETHER WITH A COUPLE OF OTHER OLD NAPOLI THREADS WE'VE HAD IN THE PAST - IT'S AT 3 PAGES ALREADY! - SO THAT ALL PARTENOPEI FANS CAN UNITE UNDER ONE BANNER - MEZZ 28/03/2010)

What ambitions does De Laurentis have for Napoli?

I remember when he bought the club in 2004 he said that there would be Champions League football in Naples within 5 years.

Are they just going to taper off to mid table obscurity?

They've built up a strong nucleus of young Italian and South American players relatively cheaply, plus a few more experienced leaders like Domizzi and Cannavaro. The only way to get into the CL straight off is by spending big, which in the long run (and possibly short) is gonna leave the club a lot worse off. And after their own money problems, they've definitely taken the right route.

Presuming they keep on this track, continue spending wisely and don't go OTT on wages, a top 6 finish or maybe better is probably only a couple of years off, on which they can build further. I'm not sure if Reja will still be there to oversee it all though.

They're not really giants,m though, are they?

Massive city, passionate fans, big stadium, but apart from the Maradona years, they've never done much.

Nice shirt, though.

Thanks for the reply.  They're employing the Arsenal route of "good husbandry" makes sense as you say given their history of bankruptcy.  Back in the UEFA Cup too http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug1i.html

Maybe they've underachieved (the Newcastle of Italy?) but you have to think that with the right investment they can establish themselves as a perennial powerhouse.  Only Roma, Inter and Milan have a higher average at the gate.

Btw, you'll have a blast at the game out there, good luck to you (lucky bastad!)

Napoli will struggle to break the top 5 like the likes of Palermo, Udinese, Sampdoria and Lazio will.  I do feel in the long term they've got a better chance of doing it than the other teams I mentioned though.

I fancy napoli for a top 6 finish this year! Maggio was a great signing for them. Haven't seen much of Denis but he looks a very useful player!

I think Napoli can achieve a consistent top 6 performance if they stay on the present path.   Maybe occasionally challenge for a CL every once in a while.   I hope so at least,    Main goal has to be to achieve a level of consistency on the field and in the finances.

If they could upgrade the San Paolo would be nice as well.

Although a Roma tifoso, my family hails from Napoli and always kind of liked them and followed them.  Unusually though, I never liked or could stand Maradona.

More of a Careca, Bagni, Ferrara fan.

Like every one else I don't believe that Napoli will finish in the top 4 this year although 5th place could be a realistic target as we could of easily disposed of Roma if we had a numerical advantage. The key to success in football is to be realistic and I believe Napoli are doing just that there not going over there heads with excitement  but are always looking onwards and upwards.

The chairman has already asked to build a new stadium but it was turned down by the local council apparently they wanted to name it Stadio Diego Maradona but an official announced that if there where to do that the player must be dead for at least 10 years....o well at least they tried.

I understand Napoli wanting a new stadium but sometimes I think that teams try to leave their old historic venue too soon and then end up downgrading in capacity. The San Paolo is the third biggest stadium in Italy behind the Olimpico and San Siro and from what I understand, Napoli has some of the best attendances in Serie A so why build a new stadium?
Yes the San Paolo has a running track but I cant call it a particularly badly designed stadium (in the mold of say the Delle Alpi)..

Anyway I hope Napoli can continue to buck the trend of falling attendences in serie A.. its always good to see a sleeping giant back.. to be honest, nearly all of the title winning teams are back in Serie A and this makes for quite the spectacle.. not to mention many many derbies

I don't know if you've seen the footage, (and i'm in no way condoning criminal behaviour) but it was one hell of a way to arrive at Rome train station!

I know P. Cannavaro is not as good as Fabio, but he has got to be better than Barzagli?   Why not call him up to La Nazionale

cause when Lippi has favourites, or when he doesnt like a player they have absolutely zero interest to him... eg panucci or cassano..

he is a great tactician but i always thought he had too many personal problems with players...
someone like capello just strikes me as being sour overall, not so much problems with one or 2 players in particular..

Read his book... Il Codino is not a big fan of Lippi needless to say...

I think Napoli are getting screwed in this whole stadium bans.   Holds the whole team hostage to the whims of a few mafioso

The 2 Curvas and the away sections will be closed.  The rest of the stadium will be open.
